On the night of Saturday, November 5, we met with the residents of the hamlet of Bembézar, belonging to the municipality of Hornachuelos (Córdoba), in a new activity organized by the Rural Development Group (GDR) of the Sierra Morena Cordobesa. The International Night of Moon Observation celebrates our connection with our natural satellite. Sponsored by NASA, it invites the global public to learn more about the Moon, observe it with a telescope, and learn about the historical and future efforts of humanity to approach it. The Town Hall of Llerena and the Interactive Science Center Experimenta-CIC invited Aula de Estrellas again to participate in this free activity. We integrated our explanations with live interpretations on the violin of pieces related to the Moon. More details about the invitation and the development of the activity.

Observation Outing to Cerro del Hierro

June 11, 2021

Finally, we conducted the first field outing of the course. The group of students from the Online Astronomy Beginners Course 2020-21 had been waiting since October for this opportunity, postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. On Friday, June 11, we traveled to the north of the province of Seville, to the viewpoint of the Natural Monument of Cerro del Hierro. We enjoyed explaining the assembly of a motorized equatorial mount with GOTO, installing a Newton-type telescope, and observing stars and planets. Additionally, we discussed the mythology of each constellation and observed Messier objects such as M13, the Great Hercules Cluster, and M57, the Ring Planetary Nebula, using a CMOS camera connected to the telescope.

In the morning, we offered a two-hour presentation on the characteristics of the Station: data, history, crews, life on board, etc., and the different ways to predict its visible passes from any location. In the afternoon, we witnessed a magnificent pass of the ISS, observing in real-time its location on a world map and the images of the Earth that the Station was capturing at that moment.
